Stop 14

On this ridge, you can see why most of Konza Prairie remained untouched by the plow. Much of the Flint Hills has thin, rocky soil that is very difficult to cultivate! Look for the smooth, gray rock with sharp edges – that’s flint (also known as chert).

Native American tribes such as the Osage and Pawnee used this area for their hunting grounds. The availability of water ensured the presence of game animals and the availability of flint made this area valuable for getting stone to make arrowheads. We have found arrowheads at Konza Prairie that are up to 6,000 years old!
