Konza Prairie soils are shallow and rocky, yet some woody plants do well under these conditions.
We call the areas with dogwood and sumac “shrublands”. They can be troublesome species, because they crowd out the grassy prairie species. Parts of the prairie that are invaded by these shrubs lose their ability to support grazing animals such as cattle or bison, because they won’t eat the shrubs. Land managers have to work to keep the shrubs off their land and one of the best tools for this is fire.
