Stop 19
We turn right at the intersection where there is a porta-potty. We don’t have water or electrical utilities in this part of Konza so toilets with running water are not possible.
Down the hill is the limestone barn that was built by the Hokanson family when they lived on this land in 1878 – 1948. Their original wood-frame house burned (as a practice burn by the Manhattan Fire Dept.) in 1995 after falling into disrepair. We still see not only their original barn but also their spring house, a stone outbuilding that used diverted cold spring water to keep food (in metal containers submerged in the water) cold. It was their refrigerator.
