Stop 10

This is a great spot to see wildflowers. The spring bloom is often spectacular in June. In fall asters, goldenrods and sunflowers are abundant. There are about 700 different species of plants on Konza!

The average rainfall at Konza is 33” each year. However, we rarely see that as an exact number.  Rather, we usually have wet years and then dry years. How do you think the prairie plants survive the dry years? The answer is complicated! Some plants have very deep roots that extend down to the groundwater. Other plants store water in structures like tubers and rhizomes underground. Many of the prairie plants either slow their growth or shut down growth, thus saving their need for water. The prairie is a much more complicated place than you might have originally imagined!
