Stop 1

Konza Prairie was previously a working cattle ranch. It was purchased by The Nature Conservancy in 1977 and is now privately owned.

The fields to the north, south, and west are plowed and planted to crops. These parts of the prairie were plowed because they lie at the bottom of the hills. The soil here is quite a bit deeper and moister than the soil up at the top of the hills. The plow was used wherever there was soil deep enough to be plowed. This land is used by the Department of Agronomy at KSU.

Check out the fields – wild turkeys and white-tailed deer are frequent visitors.
